    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Find answers to common questions about our skip hire, waste management, and recycling services. Our FAQs are designed to help you understand our process, saving you time and making your experience simple and hassle free.

If your skip needs to be placed on a public highway, road, or pavement, a permit must be applied for from the local council. This process can take between 2 and 5 working days and is subject to a council charge, which will be shown in your quick quote. Britaniacrest Recycling is happy to arrange all necessary permits on your behalf — simply let us know when booking. If the skip is placed entirely on your private driveway or land, no permit is required.
Yes — this is a legal requirement. Plasterboard can no longer be placed in mixed waste skips. It must be disposed of separately in a dedicated plasterboard-only skip. This is due to environmental regulations, as plasterboard produces harmful hydrogen sulphide gas when mixed with other organic waste in landfill. Please let us know at the time of booking if your project involves plasterboard so we can arrange the correct skip.
Our general mixed waste skips accept a wide variety of materials, including timber and wood offcuts, metals and scrap, plastics and rubber, paper, cardboard and packaging, bricks, tiles and ceramics, green garden waste such as grass, branches and shrubs, general household and domestic rubbish, and light construction and demolition debris. If you are ever unsure whether a particular material is accepted, please call our friendly team on 01293 772772 before filling your skip and we will be happy to advise.
Certain materials cannot be placed in a standard mixed waste skip. These include liquids of any kind such as paint, chemicals and oils, asbestos, white goods like fridges and washing machines unless arranged in advance, windows and double glazing which are charged separately by haulage and tonnage, contaminated soil affected by fuel spills, oil or sewage leaks, tyres, clinical or medical waste, and batteries or electrical items containing hazardous materials. Separate specialist skips can be arranged for asbestos removal. If you have waste that doesn’t fit in a standard skip, please contact our team and we will find the right solution for you.
Choosing the right skip size depends on the volume and type of waste your project will generate. As a general guide, a 4 yard skip is ideal for small domestic jobs such as bathroom clear-outs and garden tidy-ups, while a 6 yard skip suits kitchen or bedroom refits and moderate home renovations. An 8 yard skip is better suited to larger building projects involving multiple rooms, and a 12 yard skip works well for medium commercial clearances and significant construction waste. For major site clearances or large commercial and industrial projects, our 14 or 16 yard skips offer maximum capacity. If you are unsure, our team is always happy to advise you on the most suitable size — it is always better to go slightly larger than to run out of space mid-project.
Our standard skip hire period is typically 7 to 14 days, giving you plenty of time to complete your project at your own pace. If you need the skip for longer, we can arrange an extended hire period — simply contact our team before the scheduled collection date and we will do our best to accommodate you. We are well known for being flexible with hire periods, so please do not hesitate to get in touch if your project runs over schedule.
